Bluebirds and Other Cavity-Nesting Birds Project

In the 4-H Bluebirds and Other Cavity-Nesting Birds project, you will learn:

  • about small cavity-nesting birds which includes birds such as the Eastern Bluebird, Western Bluebird, Mountain Bluebird, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee, as well as many others.
  • how to properly care for cavity-nesting birds in your area including what to feed them and where they like to live.
  • how to be a part of science as you help monitor the nesting habits of birds in your area.
  • skills such as goal setting, planning and organizing, research skills, observing and collecting data, and keeping accurate records.

Project Materials (For Youth Ages 8-13) 

This project book series contains content focusing on small cavity-nesting birds with activities such as building a nest box, creating meals for your birds, and monitoring nest box activity.

  • Cornell Lab of Ornithology
    • All About Birds - Provides great information about all types of birds.
    • The Birds of America Online - Provides life histories for each of the 716+ species of birds breeding in the USA and Canada.
    • NestWatch - Allows you to become a part of a continentwide citizen-science project and nest-monitoring database.
    • Nest Cams - Take a peak at two larger cavity-nesters in their nests - the Barn Owls and Wood Ducks.
  • Sialis - A Web site developed as a resource for people interested in helping bluebirds and other cavity-nesters survive and thrive.
  • North American Bluebird Society - A non-profit education, conservation and research organization that promotes the recovery of bluebirds and other native cavity-nesting bird species in North America.
  • Dept. of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation - Provides a variety of tools and information regarding the conservation of wildlife. In particular, the "Landscaping for Wildlife" section is very useful.
