Environmental Education Project

In the 4-H Environmental Education projects, you will learn:

  • about ecological systems;
  • about biological principles of living organisms; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, self-responsibility, planning and organizing, and improving your knowledge of general science and technology.

Project Materials (For Youth Ages 8-18)

You will enjoy the challenge and excitement of exploring the ecology, science and technology of the environment with this project. The materials present basic ecological concepts to
help you develop scientific thinking and processing skills. Two major units themed Ecosystem Services and Earth's Capacity focus on invesigations and learn-by-doing activities in the world around you.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION - Level 2 (Ages 11-18)

  • Ecosytem Services explore how things in nature interrelate, You will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities that focus on ecosystems, climate change, life cycles, ecological footprints, and living a sustainable life. Available through National 4-H Council.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION - Level 3 (Ages 11-18)

  • Earth's Capacity focuses on environmental stewardship and issues such as transportation choices, waste management, composting, recycling, and natural resources.
    Available through National 4-H Council.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION Leader/Helper Guide

This Facilitator's Guide will help you support youth in his or her efforts to set goals and complete activities, as well as providing resources for the member's to use in completing the series. Available through National 4-H Council.

Cycling Back to Nature:  Food Production and Pesticides
This activity guide is for 4-H members of all ages. This curriculum provides children the chance to use critical thinking skills and the new knowledge gained to debate issues of agriculture production and pesticide use. Available through National 4-H Council.

Goober Etus
This Florida 4-H Environmental Education Activity, grades 3-8, teaches 4-H'ers the basic concepts of: interdependence, adaptation, populations, extinction, habitat, homeostasis, and predator-prey relationships.

Interpretive Orienteering
This Florida 4-H Environmental Education Activity, grades 5 and up, teaches the basic concepts of: self confidence, environmental sensitivity, various ecological concepts associated with the interpretive points, map reading, and taking compass bearings. 

Protective Coloration as an Adaptation for Survival
This Florida 4-H Environmental Education Activity, grades 2-10, teaches 4-H'ers the basic concepts of: individuals and populations, mutations, camouflage, natural selection, morphological adaptations, evolution, and prey and predator relationships. Special activities and concepts are included in this project for grades 8-10.

Environmental Impact Study
This Florida 4-H Environmental Education Activity, grades 7-12, teaches 4-H'ers the basic concepts of: environmental assessment, cost-benefit analysis, economic benefits, short-term use vs. long term, social factors, homeostasis, productivity and planning, and land use. 

Environmental Lifestyles
This Florida 4-H Environmental Education Activity, grades 9-12, teaches 4-H'ers the basic concepts of: lifestyle, quality of life vs. quality of the environment, environmentally sound lifestyle, homeostatic relationship with the environment. 

Owl Prowl Night Hike
This Florida Environmental Education Activity, grades 1-12, teaches 4-H'ers the basic concepts of; predator, prey, adaptations, and territorialism.
