4-H’ers must be 8 years old as of September 1st of the current
4-H program year to enroll in a large animal project.
 

Goat Project

In the 4-H Goat projects, you will learn:

  • how to identify breeds and select quality goats for either meat production, dairy production, or breeding;
  • best practices for animal care and management;
  • safe and ethical practices for animal welfare;
  • fiitting and showing skills;
  • how to promote the use of goat products and the goat industry; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, self-responsibility, planning and organizing, and improving your knowledge of general science and technology.

DAIRY GOAT

DAIRY GOAT Level 1

  • Getting Your Goat explores the world of goats by teaching about the many breeds of goats, the concepts of raising goats for hair or milk, feeding and care, showing, record keeping, and health.  Available through National 4-H Council.

DAIRY GOAT Level 2

  • Stepping Out teaches 4-H'ers how to judge dairy and angora goats. It also explores topics such as health problems, medicines, kidding, hoof trimming, tattooing, milking, the industry, behavior, and record keeping. Available through National 4-H Council.

DAIRY GOAT Level 3

  • Showing the Way teaches older 4-Hers how to lead younger members in Goat projects and evaluating a goat herd as well as genetics, sire selection, reproduction, record keeping, careers, and public relations. Available through National 4-H Council.

DAIRY GOAT Leader/Helper Guide

  • This Helper''s Guide will help you support youth in his or her efforts to set goals and complete activities, as well as providing resources for the member's to use in completing the series. Available through National 4-H Council.

MEAT GOAT

MEAT GOAT Level 1

  • Just Browsing explores planning a program, completing project records, developing a management calendar, completing a meat quality assurance program, participating in a quiz bowl, skillathon and tour, giving a presentation and exploring goat related careers. Available through National 4-H Council.

MEAT GOAT Level 2

  • Get Growing with Meat Goats teaches goat body parts, goat selection, breeds, record keeping, meat goat and dairy conformation, show preparations, sportsmanship, goat health, feed selection and several management skills. Available through National 4-H Council.

MEAT GOAT Level 3

  • Meating the Future teaches older 4-Hers how to control parasites, practice bio-security, conduct a judging clinic, judge goats, give oral reasons, select sires, balance a ration, compare forage samples, practice sound ethics, prevent diseases & more. Available through National 4-H Council.

Goat Learning Lab Kit - Ohio State University
This kit includes units on anatomy, breeds, care & management, conformation, identification systems, quality assurance, selection & evaluation. These popular kits provide the basis for interactive learning experiences. Kit components include posters, labels, statements, demonstration items, and charts. All posters, charts, prints and situation/task statements are laminated for increased durability with answer keys on the reverse side. Kit includes Velcro to adhere to identification tags, and zipper pouches for tag storage. Each kit is packaged in a durable canvas carrying case for easy use, storage and transportation. Item 4041K.

Goat Learning Lab CD-ROM - Ohio State University
Based on the learning lab kit, this CD-ROM will provide you with interactive quiz exercises for study of: anatomy (animal skeleton, external features), breed identification, care and management, conformation, identification, quality assurance (safe handling and medication) and selection and evaluation. Goat Pattern
 
This goat project training aid will help 4-H members make their own model goat by using the pattern in the book. Activities that can be demonstrated on the goat are administering medication, identifying parts of the goat, and many others. Available through National 4-H Council.
