Pets and Pet Care Project

In the 4-H Pets projects, you will learn:

  • how to identify breeds and select quality animals as pets;
  • best practices for animal care, handling and management;
  • safe and ethical practices for animal welfare; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, self-responsibility, planning and organizing, and improving your knowledge of general science and technology.

Project Materials (For Youth Ages 8-18) 

From Gerbils to snakes, frogs to ferrets, you will find these action packed activity guides make learning about pets fun and exciting. Through them you will share in the health, nutrition, and
care of small animals, in order to better understand them and their unique needs.

PETS Level 1

  • Pet Pals teaches about a variety of small pet breeds and then guides you on selecting a pet. Then you learn about handling, environment safety, behavior, nutritious feeding, pet body parts, and researching other types of small pets. Available through National 4-H Council.

PETS Level 2

  • Scurrying Ahead teaches about pet digestion and breeding as well as how to feed pets, shop for supplies, and determine gender, animal health, behavior, communication, and promotion. Available through National 4-H Council.

PETS Level 3

  • Scaling the Heights guides older 4-H'ers in taking leadership roles through planning and organizing events with topics that might include younger members and pets, careers, teaching others, genetics and animal welfare issues. Available through National 4-H Council. 

PETS Leader/Helper Guide

This Helper's Guide will help you support youth in his or her efforts to set goals and complete activities, as well as providing resources for the member's to use in completing the series. Available through National 4-H Council.
